Jaffna Kings Hold Their Nerve to Defeat Colombo Kaps by Five Runs in Dambulla
Jaffna Kings held off a spirited fightback from Colombo Kaps to secure a thrilling five-run victory in the seventh match of the Lanka Premier League 2026 at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium.
After being sent in to bat, Jaffna Kings posted a competitive 179 for 6 in their 20 overs, with several batters making important contributions throughout the innings.
Chamindu Wickramasinghe played the standout knock, scoring an aggressive 43 off just 22 deliveries, striking four boundaries and two sixes. Kamil Mishara provided a solid start with 39 from 30 balls, while Avishka Fernando added 34 at the top of the order. Later, Dunith Wellalage chipped in with a quick 19, and Shakib Al Hasan remained unbeaten on 10 from five balls to help Jaffna finish strongly.
Colombo Kaps shared the wickets around, with Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Shahnawaz Dahani claiming two wickets each. Milan Rathnayake and Wanuja Sahan also picked up a wicket apiece to keep the Kings from posting an even bigger total.
Chasing 180 for victory, Colombo Kaps suffered an early collapse, losing four wickets inside the first nine overs. Captain Kamindu Mendis kept the chase alive with a determined 58 off 42 balls, while Sharujan Shanmuganathan contributed a valuable 26 in the middle overs.
With the required run rate climbing, Wanuja Sahan produced a late counterattack, smashing an unbeaten 35 from just 15 deliveries, including six fours and a six, to bring Colombo within touching distance of the target. However, despite the late surge, the Kaps finished on 174 for 9, falling just five runs short.
Jaffna Kings delivered an excellent bowling performance under pressure. Lizaad Williams starred with 3 for 30, while Dilshan Madushanka and Treveen Mathew claimed two wickets each. Shakib Al Hasan and Dunith Wellalage also chipped in with a wicket to ensure Colombo never fully recovered from their shaky start.
A disciplined batting effort followed by a composed display with the ball helped Jaffna Kings secure a hard-fought five-run victory over Colombo Kaps at the Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium. Despite Wanuja Sahan’s late fireworks, Jaffna held their nerve in the closing overs to earn a valuable win in LPL 2026.
