Jaffna Kings Defend 221 to Beat Kandy Royals by 21 Runs in Pallekele

Jaffna Kings continued their impressive run in the Lanka Premier League 2026 with a hard-fought 21-run victory over Kandy Royals in the 18th match of the tournament at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Batting first, Jaffna Kings piled up a formidable 221 for 6 in their 20 overs, with valuable contributions throughout the innings. Kamil Mishara provided an explosive start, smashing 49 off just 26 deliveries, including five sixes, while Avishka Fernando added a brisk 36 from 22 balls to keep the scoreboard moving.

The middle order maintained the momentum as Chamindu Wickramasinghe played a breathtaking cameo, blasting 43 off only 15 balls with four sixes and three boundaries. Shakib Al Hasan remained unbeaten on 22, while Towhid Hridoy chipped in with 21, helping Jaffna surge past the 220-run mark.

For Kandy Royals, Moeen Ali and Wanindu Hasaranga claimed two wickets each, while Zahir Khan and Asitha Fernando picked up a wicket apiece.

In reply, Kandy Royals launched an aggressive chase and stayed in contention for much of the innings. Pawan Sandesh led the charge with a blistering 48 off 21 balls, while Lahiru Igalagamage gave the Royals early momentum with 30 from 15 deliveries.

Further contributions came from Vijay Shankar, who scored 25, while Wanindu Hasaranga and Shaheen Shah Afridi added 24 runs each. Despite the attacking approach, regular wickets at crucial stages prevented the Royals from building the partnerships needed to overhaul the target.

Kandy Royals were eventually bowled out for 200 in their 20 overs, falling 21 runs short.

Jaffna Kings’ bowling attack held its nerve under pressure. Shakib Al Hasan and Dunith Wellalage starred with three wickets each, while Dilshan Madushanka and Zahoor Khan claimed two wickets apiece. Their timely breakthroughs ensured the Royals never gained complete control of the chase despite their aggressive batting.

A powerful batting display followed by disciplined bowling helped Jaffna Kings secure a deserved 21-run victory over Kandy Royals at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Explosive contributions from the top and middle order, combined with crucial wickets from Shakib Al Hasan and Dunith Wellalage, proved decisive as Jaffna successfully defended another imposing total.
